Wildlife in Plano

Plano, TX, grew from prairie land to become one of the larger suburbs of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Its location in North Central Texas means hot summers, cool winters, and rains in the spring. Plano is particularly attractive to wildlife that prefer warmer temperatures.

Seven venomous snake species are found in and around Plano, including the notorious copperhead. Most active in warmer months, copperheads can be found near trees, rocks, or water. Snake bites usually occur because the reptile has been accidentally handled or stepped on.

Raccoons will happily steal food from trashcans, gardens, bird feeders, and ponds. They will also poach living spaces, making denning sites under porches, throughout attics, and within chimneys.

Whether they are foraging for grubs or making burrows, an armadillo loves to dig. This behavior causes expensive damage to lawns, frequently putting the pests in conflict with property owners. Armadillos are also the only species other than humans capable of carrying and transmitting leprosy.

Plano's abundant parks create a perfect home for ducks. However, hand-feeding can cause a duck to lose its instinctive fear of people. This familiarity can lead to yards filled with the pests and their droppings. Excessive waste pollutes groundwater and can spread disease.
