Types of Squirrels in West Tennessee
In Tennessee, squirrels typically seek shelter indoors during the fall to breed and raise their young. The Eastern Gray Squirrel is the most common species found in West Tennessee homes, along with Eastern Fox and Southern Flying Squirrels. While tree squirrels are active during the day, flying squirrels are nocturnal, making it easier to identify the species based on when you hear activity.
Fox Squirrels
Fox squirrels are Tennessee’s largest tree squirrel. They prefer more open woodlands with scattered mature trees but are increasingly found in suburban developments with large yards.
They are less likely than gray squirrels to enter attics, although they occasionally do when suitable nesting sites are available.
Eastern Gray Squirrels in West Tennessee
The Eastern gray squirrel is by far the most common squirrel in Memphis. It thrives in residential neighborhoods, city parks, and hardwood forests where oak, hickory, and walnut trees provide abundant food.
Gray squirrels are active during the day and are the species most often seen running across roofs or bird feeders. They are also the squirrel most frequently responsible for attic infestations.
Southern Flying Squirrel
Despite their name, flying squirrels do not actually fly. They glide between trees using a membrane stretched between their front and back legs.
They are nocturnal, so homeowners often hear them at night rather than see them. Southern flying squirrels frequently nest in tree cavities, birdhouses, and attics, particularly during winter or while raising young.
