Do you suspect a squirrel problem in your home or business? Squirrels are known to nest in the attic, crawl space, eaves, and more! The scurrying noises you are hearing may be a Douglas Squirrel, Eastern Gray Squirrel or Northern Flying Squirrel.

  • Tree squirrels normally grow up to about one foot long. Their coarse and grizzled coats are often different shades of gray, brown, or black. Tree squirrels usually have light-colored bellies.
  • Ground squirrels usually have shorter tails and fur than tree squirrels do, and are smaller in size. The fur of ground squirrels is usually red-gray or smoky brown, with patterns of black spots or stripes.
  • Flying squirrels are the smallest of the three types of squirrels. They have webbed skin between their front and back limbs, used for gliding. Flying squirrels’ fur is usually light brown or gray, and their big eyes help them see better at night.

Our technicians have the experience to identify your specific squirrel control problem and create an effective plan for trapping and removing squirrels, repairing damage, and preventing future squirrel issues.

How to Identify Squirrel Problems in Greater Seattle

Squirrels in Seattle do have the ability to create significant structural damage to homes, like all other squirrels. Grawing wires, pulling insulation, and creating holes in siding can be dangerous and cause unsightly damage to your Seattle area home and property. Squirrel nests in the attic or walls can create terrible odors and difficult stains that will require professional attention.

Squirrel Noises in the Attic

The time of day you are hearing the noises is the first step in figuring out what kind of squirrel(s) have become a problem. Eastern gray squirrels and Douglas squirrels are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day. They are heard primarily in the mornings and evenings, especially when they are leaving or returning, and occasionally at different times throughout the day. Northern flying squirrels are nocturnal, meaning they are awake and active at night.

Squirrels tend to like to stay higher up, like they would if they were in a tree. Attics and vaulted ceilings are the most common area to find squirrels living in one’s home. They are a member of the rodent family and their large front incisors allow them to chew an entry point if they are not removed from the property. They are often discovered by hearing noises such as scratching, scurrying, gnawing, chewing, and “barking” (calling) above the ceiling or in upper walls.

Types of Squirrels in Greater Seattle

Douglas Squirrels In The Seattle Area

Douglas squirrels are small and dark brown in color with a slightly lighter brown underbelly and a slightly bushy tail that tends to curl out at the point.

This species of squirrel tends to be found in more tree-dense areas, and its population is seen between Redmond/Sammamish and Gig Harbor, east of the Seattle-Tacoma metro areas.

Douglas squirrels are a protected native species and are relocated when removed from someone’s home or property.

Eastern Gray Squirrels In The Seattle Area

Eastern gray squirrels are much more common in urban areas, but are found throughout the areas we service, especially in Seattle.

These squirrels are light gray/tan in color with a large bushy tail that is as long as, or longer than, the body itself, and are active and awake during the day.

They are an invasive species, meaning they were introduced from elsewhere and are not native to the Pacific Northwest. These squirrels are much more aggressive than others and have pushed out many native squirrels, causing their populations to become endangered. Because of this, they cannot be relocated.

Northern Flying Squirrel Information In The Seattle Area

The Northern flying squirrels are small and light brown or tan/tan with a yellow-brown underbelly. They also have large skin flaps that connect the front and back feet, allowing them to “fly” (glide) through the air. Northern flying squirrels are nocturnal, meaning they are awake and active at night.

They are more often seen in areas with a higher density of forests and trees. Places like Redmond, Sammamish, Issaquah, Maple Valley, Black Diamond, North Bend, Ravensdale, and similar areas are where you might find Northern flying squirrels.

They are a protected native species and are relocated when removed from someone’s home or property.
