Centipedes are small arthropods with many legs and body segments. Some people consider them beneficial because they feed on common household pests, while others dislike their presence.

Had some kind of gopher ruining my lawn. Reached out to Critter Control. Evan and Eric are awesome. Super responsive, they we're able to get to my house within a very reasonable timeframe. No more gopher(s). Should they return Evan/Critter Control will be my first call. I highly recommend these guys. If you're having any issues with small critters, give them a shout!

I was very happy with the diagnosis and inspection of my property. I had them come out to treat for insects and spiders and they actually found a few spots on my home where birds had made their way in, they explained how they would clean out and cover the vent. They didn’t try to upsell me on anything either.

The technician was very knowledgeable and was able to catch the chipmunk within a 1/2 hour. He let him go out in the wooded area of our church. Job well done!

These pests have flattened bodies made up of different segments. Each section has one pair of legs. House centipedes, the species most often found indoors, are about an inch long with brown bodies.

Other U.S. centipede varieties may range from around a half inch to over six inches in length and come in several colors.

Controlling centipedes begins with removing possible hiding places. Trash, rocks, leaves, and boards close to buildings provide ideal habitats.

Ensuring proper ventilation in homes can prevent humid environments that attract the pests and their prey.

Do centipedes harm people or property?

Centipedes will not damage property and rarely bite. However, when handled or threatened, these pests may use their pincer-like front legs to puncture the skin.

A small centipede bite feels similar to a bee sting, while larger species can produce more painful bites. Some people may have an allergic reaction to their venom.

Are centipedes known to enter homes or yards?

When temperatures outside begin to drop, centipedes move indoors for warmth. Cracks, floor drains, and plumbing provide easy access to living spaces.

Centipedes living inside a house can survive year-round.

Most species prefer dark, moist areas. Outdoors, they reside under logs, leaf litter, or stones. In houses, residents find them in bathrooms, basements, and closets.

Centipedes eat insects and spiders and live anywhere these food sources are abundant.

Although centipedes don’t harm homes or belongings, many people don’t appreciate having them around. Getting rid of the pests often requires dealing with the underlying insect problems that attract centipedes in the first place, so professionals are the best option for reliable removal.
