Signs of Armadillos in the Yard
Armadillos can be more than simply an irritation when they enter yards. As the peculiar pests continue to expand their range north, more and more homeowners are finding telltale signs of an armadillo excavating and rooting for insects in their lawns. The animals are exceptional diggers, so landscaping damage usually includes holes up to three inches deep and five inches across. At times, it can appear as if the turf has been peeled away from the surface.
Problems in Gardens & Around Homes
Homeowners may find holes in vegetable gardens and flower beds, as well. When digging for grubs, earthworms, and insects, an armadillo in the yard will tear out bulbs and other vegetation. This can actually destabilize foundations, driveways, and other structures. Cosmetic damage may also occur on golf courses, while armadillo holes in pastures and farm fields can injure livestock.
Are Armadillos in the Yard Dangerous?
We do not recommend trying to catch an armadillo with your hands or a net. A scared armadillo usually jumps in the air to distract predators or runs away. When facing a human, it is not likely that the pest will bite. Armadillos have small, peg-like teeth that do not usually cause injury. Armadillos do have powerful front legs with sharp claws. They can scratch and injure a person and pet!
While armadillos can carry rabies or leprosy, the number of human cases caused by these pests is unknown. Both diseases transfer through direct contact with infected wildlife or people, so it’s best to avoid touching armadillos.
Armadillo Trapping and Armadillo Control
Contrary to popular belief, armadillos are capable climbers and burrowers. Barriers such as fences can help with exclusion efforts but are not guaranteed to work long-term. One of the better ways to keep armadillos away from lawns and gardens is to remove heavy brush or woodpiles that may attract pests in the first place.
