When wild mice get into your home, it can cause a lot of problems, both health and infrastructure-wise. If left alone for too long, mice can triple their population in no time, and cause very costly damages.

Once they have grown accustomed to your home, it will be quite difficult to get them out. Mice quickly become aware of their surroundings, so placing traps on your own can prove to be difficult, as they will often not take the bait from a foreign object. And even if your traps are successful, it is important to know you should never handle mice, either living or dead. For that, you should enlist professional mouse removal services, like the ones we offer at Critter Control® Gainesville.

Where Do Mice Hide in Your Home?

It’s easy for mice to infest your home without you knowing. Mice can fit into holes and cracks ¼ the size of their bodies. And if they nest in your home undisturbed, a few mice can turn into a large infestation. And since your home has everything they need- food, water, shelter, warmth- they won’t want to leave on their own. The longer they stay, the more time they have to inflict damage on your home, like gnawing through your walls, ripping out your insulation, and fraying your wiring, causing fire hazards.

Signs of a Mouse Infestation

With a historic college town like Gainesville, it’s very easy for small rodents like mice to make their way into homes. With a mouse infestation, early detection is key. It’s important to address your mouse situation as soon as it arises, or else the infestation population can grow at an alarming rate. If you do find you have mice cohabitating with you, here are some important things to remember:

  • Look out for nesting materials mice can use such as scraps of paper, cardboard, or insulation around your home.
  • If you live in an apartment complex or townhome, talk with your neighbors and make a plan to keep an eye out for mice activity
  • Keep food stored in airtight containers
  • Avoid touching or picking up droppings on your own, as mouse feces are very unsanitary and can carry a variety of diseases

into homes. With a mouse infestation, early detection is key. It’s important to address your mouse situation as soon as it arises, or else the infestation population can grow at an alarming rate. If you do find you have mice cohabitating with you, here are some important things to remember:

  • Frayed electrical wiring, which will create a fire hazard
  • Build-up of mice feces and urine, staining your ceiling and walls and soaking into your attic insulation
  • Shredded attic insulation, driving up your electrical bill
  • Damages to stored belongings

Health Threats

When searching for food or more nesting material, mice will venture out of their home in your attic, and you’ll run the risk of catching illnesses from them.  The tricky part is that mice can spread diseases without you having to touch them. Their urine and feces contaminate the air around them, making it harmful to breathe around their nests. Some of the diseases mice have been known to carry include:

  • Plague
  • Salmonella
  • Hantavirus
  • Rat-bite fever
  • Leptospirosis

We had bats living in our roof tiles, causing additional insects in the house. Our previous pest control service thought it was water, didn’t realize it was bats. Problem was going on 6 months and they never tried to seek out the problem, just kept spraying. Dave from Critter Control came out, saw the issue and took care of it. He is our new pest guy

Heard a critter in the attic, called Critter Control, and Dave came out the same day. After a recent roof replacement, we assumed attic space would be sealed off. Dave identified plenty of spaces where rodents may enter, and sealed them off properly. He then set rat traps in the attic and checked on them every other day for 2 weeks. Rodents are no longer in our attic. Excellent response and service, and would highly recommend Critter Control.
