With a warm climate and many wetland areas, Central Florida has many snakes. Many native species of snakes are important for the local ecosystem in the Orlando area. However, snakes can be very dangerous, poisonous, or not.
Snakes wander into homes in search of prey and nesting sites or find themselves inside purely by accident. Because snakes cannot chew or dig, they must gain entrance through small holes and cracks. Depending on their size, snakes may even be able to slither under gaps in doors. Once inside, snakes travel throughout houses inside walls, pipes, and around trusses.

Signs of a Snake Problem
Identifying a problem early is key to preventing damage. If you notice any of these signs, call a professional before the issue gets worse.
- Snake Droppings – Small droppings in pantries, cabinets, or along walls clearly indicate activity.
- Snake Skins – Snakes shed skin about once a month; older snakes do so a bit less. If you’re seeing snake skins in your house, then, it’s probable that the sake in question wasn’t merely passing through.
- Snake Tracks – Their appearance is reminiscent of the track a rubber hose would leave, typically about ½ an inch wide or more, in the form of wavy or straight lines. This sign can be harder to spot. You’ll typically find a track through dust or dirt.
Why Is a Snake in My House?
It could be that a single snake simply wandered into your house to seek refuge from the elements–not unlikely, as snakes are cold-blooded and very sensitive to temperature changes. Your home may offer ideal conditions for a snake—temperate and with many dark places.
Another, more concerning possibility is a rodent infestation. Snakes primarily prey on rodents. A rodent infestation could lure a snake into your home.
What Are the Most Common Snakes in Orlando?
There are several different types of snakes roaming Florida, both venomous and not. Common snake varieties include:
- Water snakes
- Indigo snakes
- Coachwhip snakes
- Rattlesnakes
- Cottonmouths
- Moccasins
- Pythons
- Boa Constrictors
Snake Control and Removal
Because of Florida’s climate and vegetation, snakes are quite common. Many snakes are harmless and can help control the rodent population around your home. Seeing the occasional snake is generally not something to worry about. Seeing too many, or one too often, is a problem, though. In addition, snakes inside your home can be extremely dangerous.
Critter Control offers safe, humane snake control for residential and commercial areas. Our wildlife specialists will come and assess the situation, determining what is attracting the snake to your home or property (e.g., food, shelter, etc.). From there, we’ll humanely remove the snake or snakes and ensure that the habitat is not inviting to snakes in the future.
