What Are the Major Wildlife Removal Concerns in Scottsdale?

Scottsdale may be next to Phoenix, Arizona’s largest city, but its location in the Sonoran Desert means this growing 250,000+ community is also home to various wildlife. Scottsdale’s warm climate and proximity to the Tonto National Forest and McDowell Mountains mean some residents will encounter nuisance animals, such as raccoons and bats, or the venomous Western Diamondback Rattlesnake in or around their homes or businesses.

Raccoon Removal

Scottsdale is home to plenty of raccoons that seek food sources such as trash cans. Raccoons are infamous for toppling garbage bins at night and leaving unsightly messes in driveways for homeowners to clean up in the morning.

Inspection: Raided garbage bins are the most obvious sign that raccoons are visiting your property at night. In addition, raccoons like to take up residence in attics. Your Critter Control specialist will look for signs that one or more raccoons are living in your attic, such as holes, droppings, and tracks.

Removal: Your Critter Control specialist will use a live trap to remove a raccoon. Although raccoons are considered a fur-bearing species and can be controlled with a firearm, we strongly advise that you contact a trained professional to remove a raccoon from your property humanely.

Repairs: First and foremost, technicians will advise on how to modify habitat, including eliminating food sources and making primary repairs to the damage caused by raccoons inside the home, such as soiled insulation in the attic. Your technician may apply sanitization and ectoparasite treatments, and repair any entry points, and suggest further ways to protect the home from future infestations with exclusion techniques.

Rodent (Rat and Mice) Removal

Scottsdale is no exception when it comes to mice and rodent infestations. If you have easily accessible food and water on your property, chances are you’ll eventually spot more than one mouse or roof rat.

Inspection: Your Critter Control specialist will immediately take note of mouse and /or rat droppings. They will also take note of nesting material and potential points of entry around and within your property.

Removal: Especially for rodents, it is important to seal the house first before attempting to remove them with traps. Please note, your technician will need to check traps daily. After the house is sealed, it usually takes about 7-10 days of trapping to get rid of rats and mice.

Repairs: Sealing up all points of entry will be the first course of action. If necessary, your Critter Control specialist will remove soiled insulation, repair damages from chew marks, and apply sanitizing agents and ectoparasite treatments.

Bat Removal

Scottsdale residents shouldn’t be surprised if they encounter an occasional bat or two near or even inside their property—the state of Arizona has 28 bat species. Although bats in and of themselves are relatively harmless, please keep in mind that bats—especially those found on the ground—can harbor rabies. Therefore, please contact a wildlife specialist if you need to remove a bat from your property.

Inspection: Critter Control’s wildlife specialists will perform a full interior and exterior inspection of your property. The most obvious sign of bats is the presence of guano, or bat feces, in and around your property.

Removal: If bats are living in your attic, it is a maternity colony with baby bats; therefore, the most humane way to remove those bats is to wait until the pups can fly. Your specialist will seal all potential entry points and install a one-way bat valve, ensuring any bats will fly out but cannot return. Once all bats have evicted themselves, your specialist will remove the valve and seal the hole. Our goal is to ensure you are safe and to remove the bat carefully.

Repairs: Bat guano, or feces, is very dangerous to humans. A mold can grow in it that leads to histoplasmosis, a lung disease. In addition to smelling bad, guano can also weaken the structure of your home. Do not try to clean up bat guano without proper PPE (respirator, gloves).

Snake Removal

Scottsdale residents know to look out for both venomous and nonvenomous snakes in their backyards as well as while enjoying the great outdoors. More than four dozen snake species live in Arizona, and thirteen of those are types of rattlesnakes.

Inspection: If a snake is in your house, it’s probably looking for food. Therefore, the most effective snake control is to eliminate their food, such as rats and mice. During the inspection, the technician will also investigate potential rodent infestations.

Trapping & Removal: It may be very tempting to remove a snake from your property if you have a shovel or firearm; however, the best course of action is to immediately contact a trained wildlife specialist who will humanely remove the snake.

Repair: Your Critter Control specialist will seal cracks and encourage you to remove piles of debris and shrubs that offer hiding spots for rattlesnakes and other unwanted snake species.
