Rodent Awareness Week is upon us! Each year, this week serves as our annual reminder that rodents can cause significant damage and pose a risk to our health. Although rodents are on the smaller side, the amount of damage they can cause is enormous. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most pressing rodent-related dangers below.
Fires Caused by Rodents
As the seasons turn cooler this year, it is prime time for rodents like mice and rats to move into your home. Rodents invade approximately 21 million U.S. homes each winter.
Mice can slip through holes as small as ¼ inch and jump up to 13 inches to reach their destination. If the mouse decides that it likes the warmer temperatures and more readily available food stores in your home, then you may have a problem with your hands.
Unfortunately, these weather changes also coincide with a peak in home fires. December and January are the peak months of home fires, which are most likely to occur between 6:00 PM and 7 PM on Saturday and Sunday evenings.
Based on a 2012 issue of Pest World, rodents and home fires may be related in some cases. Current estimates attribute that rodents are responsible for 20% to 25% of fires with unknown causes. That’s because rodents are well known for their inclination to chew on critical infrastructure points such as electrical wires and gas lines.
