Repelling Mice

Mice are common pests that damage and contaminate property. They live in garages, attics, and wall voids but can also nest indoors behind furniture or appliances. When these rodents invade homes, people often try to handle them using mouse repellents.

Natural Mouse Repellents

Some homeowners prefer to start with natural mouse deterrents before trying chemical control. Ultrasonic noise generators produce sounds that disturb and repel mice. While this method may be successful at first, the pests usually return once they realize there is no real threat.

Unpleasant scents may also work as a natural mouse repellent. Mothballs placed near nesting sites can cause mice to stay clear. Because this repellent can be harmful to dogs, cats, and children, it may not be safe for some households. Mothballs also lose their potency when left out in the open.

Modification as a Mouse Repellent

The most effective mouse deterrent method combines sanitation with habitat modification. The following are practical tips to make homes less attractive to mice:

  • Keep grass trimmed and remove thick brush near the house.
  • Clear the yard and garage of clutter, trash, and lumber piles.
  • Get rid of old appliances and vehicles that provide a refuge for pests.
  • Store bulk goods, pet food, and birdseed in airtight containers made of metal or glass.
  • Patch foundation cracks and ensure all vents are properly sealed and screened.
  • Vacuum under as well as behind furniture, reduce clutter, and clean up crumbs or spills.

Really good, honest group of people. Would highly recommend their folks. The work was quality and priced fair (we got 3 bids to confirm). Above all, when up on the ladders, they adjusted the work to only reflect what was actually needed instead of doing the entire roofline... they could have charged us the whole estimate and we would have never known. Good, honest work from honest hardworking folks who took time to care about the quality of their trade.

Critter Control did a great job of removing a raccoon from my attic and sealing the hole to close off access. The animal was inactive for a few days due to a snowstorm and a cold snap, but they persisted and were successful in trapping the coon within a day of when the weather warmed up. They also took care of a separate problem with squirrels. VERY satisfied with the work, and especially impressed by the competence and capability of Steve Waldner who did all the work. Hope that I don't need to use them again, but won't hesitate to hire them if the need arises. Dick H Okemos
