Common LA Wildlife Problems

In Los Angeles, nuisance wildlife includes those animals that threaten humans, damage property or cause an annoyance that interferes with your peace. Animals found to be nuisances include raccoons, rats, mice, squirrels, bats, skunks, snakes, opossums, groundhogs and hundreds of species of birds.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has established rules on capturing and removing nuisance wildlife. Rather than take the risk of violating nuisance wildlife laws, you may want to call professionals, like Critter Control, for help. Here are some examples of how we can help using our inspection, removal and repair process.

Bat Removal

We’ve got 25 species of bats in California, all of which are protected in some way due to diseases like the white-nose syndrome that is reducing bat populations. Bats are very beneficial to the environment, eating thousands of insects in one night.

If you have bats on your property, that means you have ample food and water for them to survive. They will find a nearby place to roost, likely in your attic, ceilings, sheds or barns. Bats threaten humans because they can carry diseases like rabies. Their guano droppings can grow mold spores that have been known to cause histoplasmosis and other respiratory problems if inhaled.

Bats are very unsanitary. Their fur is covered in their feces, and they are known to host bat bugs, which are closely related to bed bugs. It is never a good idea to interact with a bat since they may bite if they feel threatened. Instead, call us to help you get rid of bats from your home.

Inspection: Bats aren’t too difficult to locate since they have preferences for a roost. We focus more on assessing the damages caused by bat guano, like the stains it can leave behind. We must identify entry points, food and water sources.

Removal: We follow state laws and communicate with the Wildlife Department if they require testing. We know that bats fly out every evening. We install one-way doors that allow the bats to fly out, but they cannot fly back in. If we must physically remove a bat, our pros have bat gloves and other protective equipment to get the job done. We can get rid of one bat living on your property or a whole colony of bats.

Repair: Most damage is caused by bat guano, so we aim to clean areas affected by it. Keep in mind bat the maternity season is from May to August, so nothing can be done to remove or repair during this time. Exclusion methods may include installing bird netting or bird stop strips, sealing all cracks or holes that allow bats to enter a space, and eliminating food and water sources. For example, anything that attracts insects, including light sources that turn on after dark, stagnant water, manure piles and pet food.

Raccoon Removal

Raccoons in Los Angeles are only 2 to 3 feet in size, but they can do a lot of damage. Their dexterous hands assist them in breaking into your home and wreaking havoc inside and outside. They can turn doorknobs, climb trees and chimneys, open garbage cans, open gate latches, dig holes in the ground, shred insulation and rip shingles off your roof.

Raccoons will eat anything, including pet food, table scraps, bugs, small livestock and garden crops, and because they are terrific at fishing, they will steal from your pond. Raccoons can become aggressive when they feel cornered. Call our experts to avoid being bitten and make sure all damages are identified.

Inspection: We identify all signs of a raccoon, including nesting areas, feces and tracks. We look for all areas that need to be sanitized and repaired, as well as areas of entry into your home. We also locate all possible food and water sources.

Removal: Raccoons are classified as furbearers, but permits are not required to remove a nuisance raccoon. It is California law prohihts relocating a raccoon, however. Using safe and humane traps, we can get rid of the raccoon. If babies need to be removed, we can manually do so using safety equipment.

Repair: Repairs to your home include replacing insulation, wires and flooring in attics. We also repair the entry points the raccoon created or made bigger, like the ripped roof shingle or broken vents. We apply sanitization to the areas where a raccoon leaves feces and urine and use exclusion methods to ensure raccoons do not return in the future. For example, we seal all entry points around your home, from under decks to crawlspaces and chimneys. We can install roof and tree barriers, install fencing around gardens, replace sod, and provide better storage for pet food and trash. Eliminating bird feeders and birdbaths and clearing debris around your home also helps deter raccoon activity.

Squirrel Removal

The California ground squirrel is the cute creature you see in your yard scavenging for foods and nesting items. They are collectors, preparing for survival during the winter months. If you have squirrels on your property, you have a good food supply. Squirrels prefer fruits, nuts, bird eggs, garden crops, seeds, grains and bark. They seek favorable spaces to nest, too, like your attic. Squirrels will create storage space wherever they go, including underground or in trees, chimneys, crawlspaces, attic walls and basements.

Because a squirrel’s teeth are constantly growing, they are constantly chewing to prevent growth and pain. Squirrels will chew through shingles, siding, wood, plastic and anything else that separates them from where they are and where they want to go. We can help you get your squirrel problem under control.

Inspection: Squirrel inspections involve locating holes and cracks in your home where squirrels are entering. We also look for stored food, nests, burrows and damages.

Removal: Squirrels spend a lot of time away from their nests, giving us plenty of time to do our work. However, some squirrels find themselves stuck inside walls or tight spaces depending on where they have created a nest. We can manually remove squirrels or set a trap. If babies are in a nest, we reunite them with the mother after removal.

Repair: Squirrel damages usually include damaged wires, gnawed wood and siding, torn roof shingles, and trees with bark removed. We have filled in burrows, replaced chimney and vent caps, fixed wires, and replaced gutters, soffits and fascia. Exclusion includes installing tree and roof barriers to prevent climbing. We also remove food sources like bird feeders, pet food and garbage. Exclusion also involves sealing every hole and crack squirrels could use to enter your home.

Rat and Mice Pest Control

For the second year in a row, Los Angeles has been named as having the second-largest rat problem. It makes you shiver thinking about the Norway and roof rats invading your outdoor space and the house mouse living in your walls, ceiling and attic. To make it worse, rats and mice reproduce several times throughout a year, giving birth to five or more babies each time. Before long, you could have an infestation on your property.

Rats damage roof shingles, siding, fascia and electrical wires outside. They also like to burrow underground. If they do so close to your home, it could cause your home foundation to become unstable. Inside, mice will gnaw wires, flooring, walls, furniture, cabinets and groceries. They leave trails of feces and urine that can grow mold spores.

At the first sign of rodent activity, call our pros.

Inspection: We look for every hole or crack through which rodents can enter your home. For mice, the hole only needs to be the size of a quarter. We find their nests and assess for damages.

Removal: The key to properly removing rats and mice is using the right bait. Rodents are smart, and setting traps with the wrong bait can lead to further problems and larger infestations. Our experts understand baiting for Norway and roof rats, as well as house mice. Plus, we have the equipment to remove rodents living deep in your walls or in hard-to-reach places.

Repair: Rodents cause numerous minor damages that add up to one big, costly hazard. We often repair electrical wires that have been chewed, replace insulation and anything wood. Outside repairs include replacing siding, shingles, wires, chimney and vent caps, and filling in burrows. Exclusion methods to keep rodents away include proper storage of foods, inside and outside. We also clear debris from around the home where rats like to hide. We focus heavily on sealing all possible holes and cracks that lead into your home.

Bird Control

We attract many different birds in Los Angeles, including sparrows, starlings, pigeons and woodpeckers. This urbanized wildlife is annoying and can cause significant damage to your property if left uncontrolled.

Birds love to roost anywhere to wait for the perfect time to swoop down and collect an insect. They will stay on your roof, eaves, gutters, chimneys, vehicles, trees, wires and many other places. You know they’ve been there by all the poop below their roosting spot.

Birds build nests in places like vents and chimneys, creating a fire hazard for your home and family. Getting rid of bird problems is a must. We can help.

Inspection: We look for food and water sources and small openings that allow birds to enter areas of your home. We also assess damages caused by bird activity.

Remove: We can trap a bird if it is stuck in your walls or other parts, but most birds fly out independently. Once out, we close off all potential entrances to avoid returning to that spot.

Repair: Exclusion methods are implemented, such as tree netting and roof barriers. We eliminate areas where insects gather. We have occasionally had to fix damaged gutters, soffits, fascia and spouting.

Opossum Control

Opossums are more of a nuisance than a real danger. They are very common in urban and suburban settings and will eat practically anything.  Opossums will use attics, crawlspaces and the areas under sheds and porches as dens.

Inspection – Scat. Remnants of previous nights foraging and feeding.
Control—Exclusion work most effective method. Live trapping. Securing potential food sources like pet food and garbage. Sealing entry points to prevent entry to attics and crawl spaces. Scare devices provide temporary solutions and chemical repellents have significant effect.

Skunk Control

Skunks typically invade LA yards in search for food and a safe place to burrow. Sheds, porches, and foundations make ideal burrowing locations which can lead to structural damage. To avoid a skunk’s spray rely on professional handling and skunk trapping. Removing food supplies is one of the most effective ways to prevent a skunk from entering your property.

Skunk mating season starts in February. Males typically spray during fights over females. A minor skunk problem can quickly magnify during breeding season.

Inspection- Faint odor if skunks typically travel through your yard.
Control- Exclusion and habitat modifications most effective form of skunk control. Cage-type live traps.

Gopher Control

You probably won’t see a gopher or encounter one in your home. A gopher is identified by their burrow and large mound of dirt that sits above the tunnel. Their preferred diet is pieces of plants accessible underground.

Gopher control is most effective during spring and fall when gophers are most active near the surface. Activity is usually indicated by fresh mounds of soil. One gopher can create several mounds in a day. Gopher burrows can cover two hundred to two thousand square feet. The burrow system can undermine structures. Gophers will feed on garden plants and gnaw on irrigation systems.

Time, energy and resources can be wasted by trying to control gophers in an unoccupied burrow. Baiting and trapping are the two most practical and efficient methods.

Inspection- Fresh mounds of dark, moist soil signs of burrow. Probing to find main burrow.
Control- Trapping. Fumigation. Underground fencing to protect specific areas of the lawn such as flower beds and gardens.
Repairs- Leveling existing mounds.

Coyotes are also common in the LA area and patrol neighborhoods at night looking for food. In general, they are frightened of people. However, the pests will attack if they feel threatened. Coyotes also endanger household pets with their presence.
