One of the independent cities in Hampton Roads, Portsmouth is located along the Elizabeth River next to Norfolk. The city’s mild winters and warm summers, combined with communities not far from wildlife refuges and state parks, mean that property owners will most likely experience their fair share of nuisance wildlife encounters.

Raccoon Removal

Clever and dexterous, raccoon problems are frequent in areas of Virginia Beach with trash to provide meals. These animals are famous for rummaging through garbage cans and often leave porches, driveways, and yards in disarray. Raccoons in the Virginia Beach area have been known to carry rabies. Encountering nuisance raccoons on your property can be frustrating, and your first instinct may be to scare them away yourself. Instead, take the easier route and reach out to a professional wildlife specialist to safely remove raccoons from your property.

Inspection: Our technician will inspect your property look for signs of raccoons, including footprints, raccoon poop, and scattered trash.

Removal: Again, please do not attempt to harass a raccoon as that could cause the animal to become aggressive and transmit rabies. Our technician will remove all raccoons using a humane trap.

Repairs: After removal, our specialist will seal all entry points to prevent future entry. We will also clean and disinfect the affected areas.

Portsmouth Bat Removal

Seventeen bat species call the state of Virginia home. While these animals offer a natural form of insect control, they can become quite a nuisance if they set up a roost inside your attic or crawl space. If you discover bats roosting inside your home or business, please call Critter Control office so we can help you address the infestation immediately. These animals not only can cause property damage but also spread diseases.

A Portsmouth church found bats in the belfry.

Bats can leave quite a mess if they take up residence inside a home. One or more bats can leave a pile of feces, or guano, accumulating on walls and floors. After a complete inspection besides the two main entry points these bats are entering from we found many potential entry points which were all closed off.

Bat Entry Points

Bat Removal and Clean Up

After sealing the entry points, we installed two bat valves for the eviction. The one way valve allows a bat to safely leave but prevents reentry. Once all the bats are gone, clean up!

Rat and Mice Removal

Given that Virginia Beach is a coastal city with not only access to the ocean but also rivers and lakes, it’s no surprise that some property owners report rodent issues. Rats are abundant in Virginia, and home infestations are frequent. In Virginia Beach, locals have reported rats turning up in yards. Dealing with a rodent issue is far from pleasant and could lead to food contamination and health issues. If you’ve crossed paths with one too many rodents, please call Critter Control as soon as possible.

Inspection: Our technician will make a note of the usual signs of a rodent infestation, including chewing, droppings, rub marks, nesting material, and small entry points.

Removal: Once we complete our property inspection, we will determine the type of trap, number of traps, and type of bait that will best help us remove all rodents from your property.

Repairs: In addition to cleaning up all feces and urine and decontaminating the area, we will repair any entry points in and around your property.

Squirrel Removal

With plenty of natural habitat throughout the Virginia Beach area, squirrels are a familiar sight to residents and visitors alike. There are five species of squirrel in the state of Virginia: northern flying squirrel, southern flying squirrel, fox squirrel, gray squirrel, and the red squirrel. While squirrels are not known to be aggressive, they can cause quite a bit of trouble if they make their way inside your home. Please do not try to catch nuisance squirrels yourself; instead, contact Critter Control for assistance.

Inspection: There are several common signs of a squirrel infestation, and our technician will look for all of them. Gnaw marks, small openings to attics or the crawl space, debris like nuts or nesting materials, and, of course, droppings all usually mean one or more squirrels are inside your home.

Removal: Chasing a squirrel out with a broom or shovel is not the best idea. Allow one of our technicians to remove the squirrel(s) with a live trap or one-way door.

Repairs: Once we’re sure all squirrels have been removed, our technician will seal up all entry points and clean up any debris left behind.

Skunk Removal

Both spotted and striped skunks are found in the state of Virginia. While the less common eastern spotted skunk is found in the western part of the state, the striped skunk is commonly found in the eastern part of the state and is the species Virginia Beach homeowners could encounter. These adaptable, nocturnal creatures known for their pungent spray can wreak havoc if one too many discover a consistent food source on your property. If you smell a skunk on your property, please do not attempt to remove it yourself, as these animals can become aggressive and spray when threatened.

Inspection: Our technician will immediately note the telltale odor of skunk on your property and inspect your yard for holes and upturned earth created by skunks.

Removal: Again, do not try to remove a skunk without professional assistance. Instead, allow our technician to use a humane trap to safely capture the animal(s).

Repairs: Our technician will assist with removing the odor left behind. If necessary, we will install a buried fence barrier system to keep skunks away.
