The woodchuck, also known as the groundhog, is most common across the northern U.S., though they are also occasionally found in Houston, TX. Famous one day a year for predicting the coming of spring, groundhogs are content for the remaining days to dig burrows in lawns and destroy people's prized gardens. Year-round warm weather provides plenty of vegetation for woodchucks in Houston to feed on, though this behavior makes the animals unpopular with gardeners. While the pests make a variety of alarming hissing, growling, shrieking, and chattering noises, people rarely get close enough to hear these sounds.
