Snakes in DeSoto

The warm sun in DeSoto, TX, provides the perfect habitat for snakes. A number of relatively harmless species are native to northern Texas, but some, like copperheads and cottonmouths, are venomous.

Copperheads are orange with dark bands and typically found close to water in the spring. Cottonmouths, also known as water moccasins, have dark bodies with white inside their mouths. They prefer areas like swamps or marshes.

Both species are pit vipers and may bite when startled. These snake bites cause pain, swelling, and skin discoloration. The pests lounge in high grass and occasionally enter homes, causing panic.

Pests with Rabies

Because it is fatal, rabies is a major concern for the residents of DeSoto. There are several pests common to the area that can transmit the disease through bites, such as coyotes and raccoons.

Now used to living in residential areas, coyotes are attracted to the smell of garbage and compost in yards. They prey on small pets and could attack humans if threatened.

A raccoon is willing to eat anything. These pests will go where there are resources and can become aggressive if their food is removed.
