The city of Lafayette, LA, is home to serious rodent problems, primarily those caused by the swamp rat, or nutria. These pests eat the vegetation that holds in the soil lining of rivers throughout the region, which causes serious erosion issues. In addition to shrinking shorelines, nutria transmit diseases like rabies, tularemia, and leptospirosis. Mosquitoes are also drawn to the Lafayette area thanks to the hot and humid climate. They feed on human blood and spread illnesses such as the Zika and West Nile viruses, both of which cause flu-like symptoms in people.

Q&A with Local Franchisee Mark Browning:
What are some of the most common wildlife issues that homeowners face in your area?
Having very diverse wildlife we commonly see issues with snakes, rats, mice, squirrels, skunks, nutria, otters, armadillos, pigeons, raccoons, opossum, fox, coyote and bats.
How do the seasons affect wildlife activity in your area?
With each season we see different wildlife activity increase. In the spring we have many calls for service for rats, squirrels and other rodents. Summer tends to bring heavy activity of raccoon, bats and snakes. The fall temperatures coincide with rodent breeding so we tend to see more calls for home and business intrusions. In winter we deal with heavy calls for raccoons and bats.
Any prevention tips for residents in your area?
Keeping grass and lawns areas mowed leaves less harborage for snakes. Keeping trees and shrubs trimmed off homes deters many insects and wildlife from the easy travel into homes. Regular service and inspection by a wildlife professional can prevent a variety of costly repairs for damage caused by wildlife in the Lafayette area.
When should homeowners call Critter Control?
The sooner the better! Wildlife intrusions can cause very costly repairs and remediation and only get worse the longer they are allowed to continue. Many inspections reveal problems that could happen and are not costly fixes. Our technicians are trained to perform a full home inspection so that we can catch problems before they happen. Prevention is key in wildlife.
