Found throughout Miami, FL, Virginia opossums are North America's only marsupial. These pests grow to be about the size of a large house cat. Distinguishing characteristics include long, hairless tails, small ears, and pointy noses. Opossums also have opposable thumbs and prehensile tails, which allow them to grab onto tree limbs or nesting materials.
Opossums in Yards
While opossums prefer to live in wooded areas near water, they are highly adaptable and may be found in cities as well. The opportunistic omnivores will scavenge through trash and cultivated gardens or even eat pet food, making them nuisances to homeowners. In addition, these intelligent pests have excellent homing instincts, frequently returning to yards where they found food in the past.
Disease & Danger
Opossums are not aggressive animals, though they will attempt to ward off threats by hissing, growling, playing dead, or even biting. More worryingly, their presence in Miami may attract panthers and other predators to residential areas. Opossums can also bring dog and cat fleas, lice, and ticks into yards. Capable of transmitting several diseases, these parasites are dangerous to people and pets. For these reasons, it is recommended to call the pest experts at Critter Control to safely remove or exclude opossums from private properties in Miami.
