Q&A with Branch Manager Steven Meinecke
What are some of the most common wildlife issues that homeowners face in your area?
I would say the most common issues we are called out for are, Animals in the attic or crawlspace, be it, rats, mice, raccoon, opossum, skunks, squirrel or birds. We also deal with dead animal removal, and Snake removal from time to time.
How do the seasons affect wildlife activity in your area?
Here in California, our seasonal changes are not as drastic as other places in the U.S. We see rodent and opossum activity year round with spikes in activity after increases in rainfall or after a drop in temperature. Squirrels will nest one time in the spring and sometimes again the fall. We will see heavy skunk activity January through April, June through October, and raccoon activity March through October. Snakes are most active, just after the temperature spikes to the 90-100 degree mark.
Any prevention tips for residents in your area?
It is always a good practice to be proactive in keeping your home closed against wildlife entry. First start with a walk around the perimeter of the base of the home, and check to make sure your foundation vents, and crawlspace covers are sealed up and in good condition. (Any hole the size of a dime is big enough for a mouse to fit through.) Then once around again to check the eave/fascia vents under the eaves of your roof are in good condition. If you can do so safely, get on the roof and check for activity in all of the roof overlaps, or where two or more roof lines meet together. You may need to call Critter Control in order to have this done safely by a professional.
Try to keep all vegetation away from the home and 4ft from the roof line where possible. If you have fruit trees, try to cull/pick the fruit as it ripens, and keep fallen fruit picked up off the ground. Last but not least if you have a chicken coop, or bird feeders, try to keep them as neat as possible, to prevent drawing rodents.

Homeowners can call Critter Control anytime they have any wildlife issue, or if you simply have a wildlife question. We are always happy to discuss anything a homeowner is seeing, or hearing. If we can't help you solve your issue, we can get you in touch with someone who can.
